What to expect at your first physiotherapy appointment

If you've never seen a physiotherapist before, it's normal to feel unsure about what to expect. Whether you're dealing with pain, recovering from an injury, preparing for or recovering after surgery, or simply looking to improve your movement and performance, your first physiotherapy appointment is designed to help identify the root cause of your concerns and create a personalized treatment plan.

At Sitka, our goal is to make you feel comfortable, informed, and confident throughout the process. Here's what you can expect during your first physiotherapy appointment.

1-ON-1 CARE FOCUSED ON YOU

Here at Sitka Health Collective, all physiotherapy appointments are conducted one-on-one with your physiotherapist. This means your entire appointment is dedicated to you, your assessment, your treatment, and your goals.

Unlike some clinic settings where therapists may divide their attention between multiple patients at once, your physiotherapist will work directly with you throughout your session. This allows for a more thorough assessment, personalized treatment, and plenty of time to ask questions and discuss your progress.

We believe that individualized care leads to better outcomes. Your treatment plan will be tailored to your specific needs, whether you're recovering from an injury, managing persistent pain, returning to sport, recovering from surgery, or working toward improved strength and mobility.

Our goal is to provide a supportive environment where you feel heard, understood, and empowered throughout your recovery journey.

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

Along with your booking confirmation, you will receive a link to complete intake forms regarding your health history and details about your injury/complaint. This information helps your physiotherapist better prepare for and understand your situation before beginning the assessment.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows movement and provides access to the area being assessed. For example, shorts may be helpful for knee, hip, or ankle concerns, while a tank top can be useful for shoulder or neck assessments.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Your appointment will begin with a conversation about your health history and current concerns. Your physiotherapist will ask questions such as:

  • What symptoms are you experiencing?

  • When did the issue begin?

  • Have you had any previous injuries or surgeries?

  • What activities make your symptoms better or worse?

  • What are your goals for treatment?

This discussion helps us understand not only your symptoms but also how they are impacting your daily life, work, exercise, and hobbies.

PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT

Next, your physiotherapist will perform a comprehensive physical assessment. Depending on your condition, this may include:

  • Evaluating your posture and movement patterns

  • Assessing joint mobility & range of motion

  • Testing strength and flexibility

  • Testing balance and coordination

  • Identifying areas of pain or tenderness

  • Observing functional movements such as squatting, walking, reaching, or lifting

The assessment is tailored to your individual needs and helps determine the underlying cause of your symptoms rather than simply treating the area where pain is felt. For example, if you have complaints of a shoulder pain, your assessment may include investigating the neck and thoracic spine. And ankle injuries may involve assessment of the knee and hip joints. Everything is connected!

UNDERSTANDING YOUR DIAGNOSIS

After the assessment, your physiotherapist will explain their findings in clear, easy-to-understand language.

You'll learn:

  • What may be contributing to your symptoms

  • Why you're experiencing pain or dysfunction

  • What factors may be slowing your recovery

  • What treatment options are available

  • What to expect throughout the rehabilitation process

Here at Sitka, we believe education is one of the most important parts of treatment because understanding your condition helps you take an active role in your recovery.

YOUR FIRST TREATMENT

Treatment begins during the initial appointment. Depending on your needs, treatment may include:

  • Manual therapy

  • Exercise prescription

  • Mobility and stretching programs

  • Strengthening exercises

  • Dry needling

  • Anatomical acupuncture

  • Education on pain management and injury prevention

Your physiotherapist will explain each treatment option and ensure you are comfortable with the proposed plan.

CREATING YOUR PERSONALIZED RECOVERY PLAN

No two people are the same, which is why every treatment plan is individualized.

Your physiotherapist will discuss:

  • Your recovery goals

  • Recommended treatment frequency

  • Home exercises

  • Activity modifications

  • Strategies to support long-term health and wellness

The goal is not only to help you feel better but also to address the root cause of your symptoms and reduce the likelihood of future issues.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DO I NEED A DOCTOR’S REFERRAL?

No! In Alberta, you do not need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist. However, some extended health benefit plans may require one for reimbursement, so it's worth checking with your insurance provider.

WILL TREATMENT HURT?

Physiotherapy should not be excessively painful. Some assessment/treatment techniques or exercises may temporarily reproduce symptoms and/or create muscle soreness, but your physiotherapist will work within your comfort level and explain what to expect throughout the process.

HOW MANY APPOINTMENTS WILL I NEED?

The number of treatments varies depending on your condition, goals, and individual response to treatment. Some people notice improvement within a few visits, while others with more complex conditions may require a longer rehabilitation plan.

STARTING YOUR RECOVERY JOURNEY

Whether you're dealing with a recent injury, chronic pain, pelvic health concerns, or looking to improve your performance and movement, physiotherapy can help you move with confidence and get back to doing what you love.
